Malek Hammoud

Software & systems builder — computer science @ McMaster

I’m Malek Hammoud. I build software that has to work: Linux distros, weed-finding robots, and local AI.

I started in high school with games and robots, and kept going until the projects crossed into things people actually run in the wild: a weed-spraying rover that took bronze at the Canada-Wide Science Fair, an Arch Linux distribution with a SourceForge award, and a travel-safety platform now serving over two thousand users a month (as of Oct 2026). I interned twice before university — as a full-stack developer at Playtoon IT (2025) and a software developer at Bryck Technologies (2024–25). I’m looking for a software engineering internship for Summer 2027.

A few things I’ve shipped

All work
  1. 2026IsMyTripSafe[1]A destination-safety platform that turns government advisories plus live web research into a single 0–100 score for 1,000+ cities. Now at 2,000+ monthly users (as of Oct 2026).IsMyTripSafe destination safety report
  2. 2026Shadow Stalker[2]A drone-fleet search system that finds a moving boat in a Gazebo + ArduPilot Arctic simulation — vision, pixel-to-GPS geolocation, and a fixed-wing-to-quad handoff that cut median localization error from 79 m to 12.4 m.Fixed-wing camera view with the target vessel geolocated
  3. 2026Flow Arch[3]An Arch Linux distribution built around enforced focus — compositor-level control, not another Pomodoro app. 700+ downloads.
  4. 2025Basil Home AI[4]A smart-fridge engine running QNX RTOS on a Raspberry Pi with on-device grocery detection and expiry-ranked recipes.
  5. 2024GreenGuardian[5]An autonomous robot that finds invasive weeds with TensorFlow Lite vision and spot-sprays only the weed. Bronze at the Canada-Wide Science Fair.GreenGuardian weed-spraying rover prototype
  6. 2025Drone litter-mapping system[6]An F450 drone that flies GPS waypoint grids, detects litter with YOLOv5 at 90% accuracy, and tags each hit to a live map.
  1. [1] Live at ismytripsafe.com.
  2. [2] Hack the North 2026 — 1st place, Dominion Dynamics sponsor track; Top 32 of 250+ teams.
  3. [3] SourceForge — 700+ downloads, Rising Star Award.
  4. [4] Hack the 6ix 2025 — winner, Deloitte "Best Use of AI for Green".
  5. [5] Canada-Wide Science Fair 2024 — bronze medalist.
  6. [6] Research paper and write-up in the logs.

Right now

Most of my time goes into IsMyTripSafe, an autonomous drone-swarm search system, and whatever local LLM infrastructure I’m tuning that week — plus the occasional write-up for the logs page.
